Clearing mental barriers and saving lives!

Let's look at the Good Samarian Law and the 5 things we can do!

The "Good Samarian" Law:

The Good Samaritan Law offers legal protection in the form of exemption from lawsuits and liability, acting as a safeguard to those who help another in a real emergency, life-or-death situation. Good Samarian laws only help if the rescuer (or would-be rescuer) is acting without any expectation of reward. In other words, if you are getting paid to rescue then you aren't a good Samarian. Paid rescuers are expected to do their jobs correctly and can be held accountable for mistakes. Want to dive deeper into this law visit this link: Learn the Purpose of Good Samarin Laws (verywellhealth.com)

The Five Simple Steps that May Save a Life:

Acting now can make a difference, the numbers have proved it! Review the below and visit FEMA's website, specifically the Preparedness Community pages!

Call 9-1-1 (This alone can be a game changer)

  • Don’t assume someone else has already done so.
  • 911 operators are highly trained and will help you.
  • Let them coach you through the life-threatening situation.

Stay Safe (Don’t add to the victim count)

  • Assess the situation: pause and use all available senses.
  • Decide whether to stay and help, grab the injured and get to safety, or get yourself to safety.

Stop the Bleeding

  • Apply steady, firm pressure on the source of bleeding until first responders arrive.
  • If you can't control the bleeding with manual pressure, consider a tourniquet.

Position the Injured (Recovery position)

  • Lay the injured on their side, legs slightly bent, with bottom hand reached outward and head resting near hand (see image).
  • Raise the chin forward with mouth pointed downward.

Provide Comfort (If a heart/cardiac event this comfort can have a physically calming impact!)

  • Share names and ask basic questions.
  • Tell them what you know happened, but do not speculate.
  • Keep them warm and offer a hand to hold.
  • If they are alert, ask about other pain, meds or allergies.
  • Note the time of engagement.

Note the time of your engagement, if the person is responsive probe around medications, allergies and any symptoms or other injuries/pain they may have. You don’t know what you can't see, and when the professionals arrive transfer that information to them.
